Microfiber is a synthetic material that consists of an interlocking blend of two fibers: polyester and polyamide. Polyester is a fiber that is useful for polishing and cleaning while polyamide is a fiber that is absorbent and quick-drying. When the two fibers are combined, the individual qualities of both fibers are united, creating the uniqueness and effectiveness of microfiber as a material.
The revolutionary technology and effectiveness of the microfiber lies in the construction of each strand. Each microscopic strand of microfiber has been split, creating millions of tiny hooks that attract, absorb and remove all kinds of dirt, dust and bacteria from a surface. Each strand of fiber is shaped like a wedge, trapping the dirt until it is washed. Since the dirt gets trapped in the fibers, the same microfiber towel or mop head can be used for a longer period of time, cleaning larger surface areas before having to be laundered. Each square inch of microfiber contains approximately 90,000 fibers.
Microfiber cloths are extremely popular for cleaning. Since they are made of polyester and nylon material, they do not harbor bacteria like their cotton counterparts. They are naturally anti-bacterial. Traditional cotton cloths can push around dirt and germs, but microfiber scoops it up and traps it in the cloth until it is washed.
Microfiber has become a universally used cloth because of its cleaning capabilities. Microfiber is also cost effective. The price of the cloth is relatively low, and many commercial cloths can be washed up to 500 times. As with any product, there are different qualities in the marketplace, so inferior lower quality cloths do exist.
Microfiber mops also do not foster germs and bacteria. Microfiber mops are extremely effective in lifting and trapping dirt. Using microfiber mops help to lower the risk of spreading infection since a new mop head should be used for each area to be cleaned. Microfiber mops are very lightweight and easy to change. They are much less tedious than their string and dust mop counterparts.
Microfiber towels should never be washed with any other laundry, especially cotton terry towels. The lint from the other towels will stick to the microfiber and you will have a very hard time getting it off. To keep the wedges intact, it is best to wash microfibers in a full load to ensure less wear and tear.
The fact that microfiber consists of polyester and polyamide makes it a truly miracle towel. Since polyester and polyamide are petroleum based, microfiber is actually an oil based product. As you know, oil and water don’t mix, so the fact that microfiber can “absorb” seven times its weight in liquid is amazing. The fact is microfiber is not absorbing anything. Polyester is not absorbent. It is the shape of the fibers that hold the water until it is released (by wringing, drying, etc.).
Using microfiber towels has many benefits, but one of the best features is the energy savings. Since microfiber needs to be washed in cold water, you can save on your hot water bill. Also, the permanent press and air dry settings on your dryer will use less energy than the regular setting. Many microfibers can fit into a machine at one time; in fact, it is encouraged to wash as many as you can together.
