What Style Microfiber Towel is Best for Your Car Wash?

In the summer issue of Northeast Carwasher, our very own Valerie Sweeney wrote an article about how the microfiber towel market has expanded, providing car wash operators with more choice than ever. Read on to learn more about the different microfiber towel options available to the carwash industry.

Terry-Style Microfiber:
The most popular type of microfiber used in the car care industry is terry-style microfiber. It is the closet microfiber option to a traditional towel with its high, soft pile. It is extremely versatile and can be used for a wide variety of applications in a carwash. The larger sized towels, between 15” x 24” and 16” x 27”, are ideal for body drying and wax removal. The smaller terry-style microfiber towels are great for detail and window.

Waffle-Weave Microfiber:
Waffle-weave microfiber towels are another popular option for the carwash industry and many operators say they are the best on glass. They get their name from the dimpled “waffle” appearance on the towel. The waffle ridges allow them to trap a lot of water and some operators feel the ridges allow this towel to better remove raised debris such as bird droppings from surfaces.

Microfiber Glass Towels:
A lot of towel companies also have a shiny style microfiber with a flat, tight texture that they market specifically as a glass towel. These towels are lint free and do not leave streaks on windows when used properly, but the same holds true for all microfiber towels and the two listed above are much more popular.

Suede Microfiber:
Suede is the least popular microfiber towel used in the car wash industry. Because it’s so smooth, it’s usually used to clean sunglasses, copier machines, and electronic screens like iPads and televisions. With that said, they can still be used on dashboards and windows and are also well suited for cleaning touch screen displays built into consoles.

Economy/Limited Use Non-Woven Microfiber:
Non-woven microfiber towels do not look like typical microfiber and are often thrown away after use even though they can be machine washed a few times. They closely resemble a thick piece of paper but are lint free, super absorbent, and perfect for cleaning glass. Their thinner design makes them ideal for wiping tight corners too.
